Reimagining the Stadium Experience: WISE NYC Metro Hosts Industry Panel with NYCFC

On May 21, WISE NYC Metro presented a forward-looking conversation at NYCFC’s Experience Center in Manhattan, bringing together professionals across sports, technology, and entertainment to explore the evolving role of stadiums in the modern sports ecosystem.

The event spotlighted Etihad Park, NYCFC’s new stadium slated to open in 2027 in Queens. But the discussion extended far beyond the physical structure. Panelists examined how stadiums are being reimagined as multi-use, community-integrated destinations that serve fans, residents, and businesses year-round. Panelists Included:

  • Nicole Chaplin, Executive, Global Partnerships, KLUTCH Sports Group
  • Melissa Mullarkey, SVP, Business Development, Boldyn Networks
  • Jennifer O’Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer, New York City FC
  • Moderated by Jane McManus, award-winning sports columnist, NYU professor, and author

Key Themes and Insights:

  • Multi-Use Venue Design & Operational Flexibility

Etihad Park will anchor a new district in Willets Point that blends residential, retail, and public space. The stadium’s mixed-use design prioritizes flexibility—accommodating concerts, community events, and commercial activations alongside professional soccer.

  • Infrastructure & Real-Time Engagement

Connectivity is a foundational layer of the fan experience. Panelists emphasized the importance of robust digital infrastructure that enables real-time engagement, immersive content, and seamless operations across diverse event types.

  • Concerts & Cultural Programming

With the ability to host large-scale concerts and cultural events, the stadium is positioned as a year-round entertainment hub. This multi-functionality reflects a broader industry trend toward maximizing venue utility and audience reach.

  • Community Integration & Equity

Located in one of the most diverse areas in the U.S., the stadium project is being developed with a strong emphasis on community inclusion. From local hiring to public space design, the initiative aims to reflect and serve the surrounding population.

  • Commercial Models & Purpose-Driven Partnerships

Panelists discussed how brand partnerships are evolving from static placements to integrated experiences. The most effective collaborations are those that align with the venue’s mission and enhance the fan journey—both on-site and digitally.

A Glimpse Into What’s Next

The conversation underscored a shift in how sports venues are conceived: not just as places to watch games, but as dynamic, connected environments that blend entertainment, commerce, and community.  Etihad Park represents a new model—one that prioritizes innovation, flexibility, and cultural relevance.
