2024 WISE NYC Metro Chapter Women of Inspiration Awards Event

The NYC Metro Chapter of WISE hosted its annual Women of Inspiration Awards Reception on December 4, 2024, at the Hard Rock Cafe, Times Square in New York City. Sponsored by the NBA and Scripps, this year’s event honored women who embody the WISE mission, are positively impacting the sports and events industries while serving as role models and mentors for other women.

The year-end holiday celebration honored Lauren Cohen, Vice President of Partner Management and Operations, National Basketball Association; Amanda Kraus, Chief Executive Officer, USRowing; and Christina LaBrie, Senior Vice President Player Relations, Major League Soccer

Attendees embraced a “Rock ‘n Roll Chic” dress code, channeling their inner rockstars while mingling before the evening’s highlight: a fireside chat with the honorees. The discussion was moderated by former WOI honoree Wendy Hilliard, Hall of Fame gymnast and Founder & CEO of the Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation.

The 2024 Women of Inspiration honorees shared invaluable insights during the conversation:

  • Lauren Cohen reflected on her career longevity with the NBA, which spans over 20 years—a journey that began with the intention of returning to her home state of Maryland after just a few years in New York. Her story highlights the importance of keeping an open mind about career plans and allowing for flexibility, as opportunities often evolve in ways we cannot predict. Lauren credited mentorship and friendship as the pillars of her success, helping her see the bigger picture and stay the course in her career. Her advice served as a reminder to attendees to embrace adaptability and lean on their networks for guidance.

  • Amanda Kraus encouraged attendees to “Just Put Your Blade in the Water,” a powerful metaphor urging women to take the first step in pursuing their dreams. Amanda emphasized that success doesn’t come all at once—it starts with simply beginning, and the rest will follow. Her message resonated deeply, serving as a call to action for women to overcome hesitation and boldly dive into their aspirations.

  • Christina LaBrie shared her inspiring career pivot, transitioning from a long tenure as an immigration attorney to a new path in the business of sports. Determined to chase her passion, Christina earned a graduate degree in sports business and pursued opportunities relentlessly. After being passed over for one role, her stellar interview performance made her a perfect fit for an unadvertised position within the same organization. Her journey exemplifies the value of resilience, calculated risks, and staying prepared for unexpected doors to open.

Each honoree embodied qualities that left a lasting impression on the sold-out audience: mentorship, fortitude, and the courage to take calculated risks. Their stories served as powerful reminders that success is rarely a straight path but is shaped by adaptability, perseverance, and the support of others.
